This is probably one of the top 3 of the best bands I’ve discovered in 2011 (thus far). When I first heard Star Fire Power’ I dedicated a status on Facebook saying “This song fucks my brain out”. Everything in that song is just so sexy… be it the drum patterns intro, sexy singing and its sweet lyrics – it’s not hard to fall in love with the rest in the album afterward.

I’ve been listen to the album (same title with the band’s) for over three weeks now. It’s got aืืn influence from the 80-90s, while some heavy 60s can also be found from ‘Spacetime’. It sure does sounds a bit wrong, but all in all Gardens & Villa is quite a sweet mix. According to the band’s page, the album claims to be ‘a fine cup of tea with the right sugar’.

What’s W.O.W anyway? My friend said it’s ‘World of Warcraft’ and that kinda make senses if you read the lyrics (Hey you, where’s your blood?/ Where are your bones?/ How come you’re invisible?)…but I hope that isn’t the case cause my hearth would be broken if my favorite song of 2011 is actually written for computer games addicts >_<

Midnight City – M83

I am a bit disappointed after downloaded Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming that we won’t hear much of something that sounds like Midnight City. I’ve been listening to it for a few weeks and holding back on posting this but I guess I can honestly said I didn’t like it that much. Well, It’s not all bad and while Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming might not be what I have hoped for, M83 do have some old collections that worth mentioning. Below are a few samples that I like:

When there was a big fuss about Go Outside (below), their debut single last year I thought Cults will just be another one-hit wonder because Go Outside really sounds like one of those songs and I just can’t explain why I feel that way.

I’m not a fan of oldie and I wasn’t sure if I can listen through the whole album that feel like is taken from one of the girl groups from the 60′s. Months later, after I downloaded the album and I guess I was wrong. I’ve been listening to Cults day and night – from getting out of bed, getting ready to go to work, on skytrain, at work, waiting for dinner, before bed…. I must really like Cults I guess. It’s hard to pick samples for this one but here are most listened to:

‘I tried to heal myself / and turn around cause someone else / but I could never be myself / so fuck you’ — it’s the sweetest fuck-you-singing I’ve ever heard.

The band is originally from San Diego and is currently base in Manhattan New York. Members include Brian Oblivion (vocal, guitar and percussion) and the lovely vocalist, Madeline Follin.

I fail in love with this four-piece band since the first ten second I hear the drum pattern in Strange’s intro…. (try)

Strange but true, ‘Strange’ is the last track in Belong (2011) album but is probably the best track thus far. Other recommendations are: the album’s title ‘Belong’, or their first single ‘The Body’.

Based in New York, Pain of Being Pure at Heart now consists of four members including Kip Berman (vocals and guitar), Peggy Wang (keyboards and vocals), Alex Naidus (bass) and Kurt Feldman (drums). Pains of Being Pure at Heart will be playing at Laneway’s Festival 2012 in Singapore on February 12.

I heard their best known single, Pump Up Kicks, everywhere over the past few months (summer!) and I got tired of it. It was until last week when I was at my friends’ house for pre-party drink and I heard Helena Beat and Houdini and I just love them more.

Foster the People is an American indie-pop band and based in Los Angeles, CA. The band consist of two Mark(s) and Cubbie, although they do have two live musicians, Sean and Isom touring with them at the moment. That’d make five hotties in the band! Sure most people have heard of Pump Up Kicks so I won’t put it up here, but check out two pieces of beauty below!!

I’m so effing excited about this! The best indie-music festival from Australia is coming back to Singapore for the second year (as if I live in Singapore!). This promo vid has just been released a few days ago and the dates have been announced for each places – it’s 12.02.12 for southeast Asia’s leg.

Rumors about lineups have been flying around already that we might be seeing The Horrors, Cults, Bon Iver, the hottie James Blake or even M83 (music featured in this promo vid and I will blog about them later). But you know, rumors are still rumors. Full lineups will be announce on 10.10.11.

Well it’s not a secret that I love nerdy guys. There’s something about nerds or hipsters that I love to look and adore . Probably because of their awkwardness and adorable face, especially when they get excited or get carried away when doing something they’re obsessed with. I can never find a reason why I find nerds are cute but I thought I should blog about this.

Formed when they were only 15, this London based four-piece band consists of Jack Steadman (lead vocals, guitar), Jamie MacColl (guitar), Ed Nash (bass) and Suren de Saram (drums). After entered and won “Road to V” competition from Virgin’s Mobile in England, the band were given an opening slot for “V Festival” in 2006.

Their debut album, I Had the Blues But I Shook Them Loose was released in 2009 with Island Records. Following the sophomore album in 2010, Flaws, the band has just released A Different Kind of Fix this year (2011).

It’s a bit hard to categorize Bombay Bicycle Club. Some would describe them as an ‘indie-rock’ band and sometimes it could be a ‘folk band’. But yeah, this is something you can expect to hear when you enter any TOPSHOP anywhere in the world. Yeah, that how I’ve heard of the band – from TOPSHOP in Bangkok.

Angus and Julia Stone is a brother-sister duo from New South Wales, Australia. A few of their EPs and albums has been released since 2006 but they are quite new to me so I don’t have much to say about them.

I don’t know much about this English dance-punk band with their weird name, YAAKS (with capital letters), and their hard-to-pronounce singles’ title (e.g. HRHRHYTHM, CAVALCADE or BRKLYN FIG 1 – not sure what that’s all about) All I know is that they produce some good tunes and I can’t wait to hear more of them. If you’re a fan of Friendly Fires or Foals, you won’t find it hard to like YAAKS. Hear it yourself:

My ears jizzed when I first heard Julius on their Facebook page. It’s love at first heard!

Starfucker (aka STRFKR when touring) is a electronica band from Portland, Oregon. Previously released a band-title album ‘Starfucker’ in 2008, a few EPs in between 2008 – 2010, and ‘Reptilians’ in 2011 with Polyvinyl Record.

Members include Joshua Hodges (vocals, keyboards, guitar, drums), Ryan Biornstad (guitar, keyboard, vocals, turntables), Shawn Glassford (bass, keyboards, drums), and Keil Corcoran (drums, keyboards, vocals). According to their page on Wikipedia, Hodges describes the band’s music as “dance music that you can actually listen to, that’s good pop songs, but also you can dance to it”

#funfact: STRFKR was to play at SXSW earlier this year but Ryan Biornstad was arrested by polices and charged with ‘standing in street and resisting arrest’ while unloading instruments from the band’s van for the show. The band recorded vid of the event and claimed Ryan was innocent and the polices were just ‘over stressed’ during the festival. The band also started a campaign “Free Ryan” printed T-shirt. Ryan was freed 10 hours later. If I’m not wrong, all their shows at SXSW were cancelled. Want more drama? The van Ryan got arrested for was broken after he was released.

People, please please please give them a chance! Stop with all the “MGMT!! MGMT!!” or “Passion Pit!! Passion Pit!!” comments. The Naked and Famous deserves better! They were just born after MGMT and Passion Pit, that’s all.

Let’s look at it this way, IF (yeah a big ‘if’) MGMT and Passion Pit have children together, this is what their baby would sound like:

Originally from New Zealand, the band consists of Alisa Xayalith, David Beadle, Thom Powers, Aaron Short, and Jesse Wood. ‘Passive Me, Aggressive You’ album released in November 2010 and received positive reviews from many publications like NME and Q Magazine.

The five-piece band was also nominated for BBC’s sound of 2011 and gained lot of attentions from music critics during their show at SXSW in Austin, Texas earlier this year. If you’re wondering what the fuzz about the Naked and Famous is all about, try it yourself:

Finger crossed for some Southeast Asia tours before Fuji Rock. As always, it doesn’t have to be Bangkok. I’d be happy to fly to Singapore or Hong Kong for this one.
